IIW / IWCertification

International welding qualifications and manufacturer certification to ISO 3834 and EN 15085.

IWE · IWT · IWS · IWPISO 3834 · EN 15085IIW harmonised syllabus

// Overview

What is IIW / IW certification?

The International Institute of Welding runs a harmonised qualification system recognised by its member countries, so a diploma earned in India carries the same meaning abroad. The personnel route certifies people; the manufacturer route certifies companies.

For fabricators, ISO 3834 quality requirements and EN 15085 railway welding certification are increasingly written straight into tender conditions -- which makes them a commercial requirement as much as a technical one.

Examination & certification process

01

Personnel Qualification Route

Four IIW diplomas sit on one ladder. Entry level depends on prior education and shop-floor experience.

  • IWE - International Welding Engineer: the full theoretical route, for engineering graduates taking responsibility for welding coordination.
  • IWT - International Welding Technologist: for diploma holders and technologists in welding supervision roles.
  • IWS - International Welding Specialist: for supervisors and inspectors with practical shop-floor experience.
  • IWP - International Welding Practitioner: the practical-track entry point.
02

Course Structure

All personnel courses follow the IIW harmonised syllabus, delivered in four parts and examined part by part.

  • Part 1 - Welding processes and equipment
  • Part 2 - Materials and their behaviour during welding
  • Part 3 - Construction and design
  • Part 4 - Fabrication, applications engineering and quality assurance
03

ISO 3834 - Quality Requirements for Fusion Welding

Certifies the manufacturer, not the individual. Three levels let a shop certify at the depth its work actually demands.

  • ISO 3834-2 - Comprehensive quality requirements, for pressure and safety-critical fabrication.
  • ISO 3834-3 - Standard quality requirements, the common structural-fabrication level.
  • ISO 3834-4 - Elementary quality requirements, for simple non-critical work.
  • Requires a responsible welding coordinator, qualified WPS/PQR, qualified welders and traceable records.
04

EN 15085 - Railway Vehicle Welding

The certification Indian Railways and rolling-stock suppliers ask for. Certification classes follow the safety category of the components being welded.

  • CL 1 - Full certification, including high-stress safety-relevant joints.
  • CL 2 - Components with medium stress and safety relevance.
  • CL 3 - Low-stress, low safety-relevance components.
  • CL 4 - Fabrication with no welded safety-relevant components.
05

Validity & Renewal

Both personnel diplomas and manufacturer certificates run on fixed cycles with surveillance in between.

How WeldFab Tech Supports the Route

  • Gap assessment against the target standard before the certification body is engaged.
  • Welding coordinator support, WPS/PQR preparation and welder qualification planning.
  • Documentation and quality-system build-out for the audit.
  • Training for the shop team ahead of the surveillance audit.
